He Sat Down & Taught Us

How Joseph McNeil showed us the power of nonviolence to meet this moment

A week ago today, Major General Joseph A. McNeil, one of the “Greensboro Four” who launched the sit-ins that catalyzed the Southern freedom movement in 1960, died at age 83.

At McNeil’s alma mater, North Carolina A&T State University, the community gathered today to mourn our loss, celebrate the gift of his life, and entrust him to the Lord. I’m grateful to his family for inviting me to offer this eulogy, and I share it with you as an opportunity to receive the wisdom he taught us. We need it now more than ever.
