Keep Your Eye On the Budget

Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, SNAP. It's all on the chopping block.

I’m grateful to the “Washington Journal” for a space in American media where we can still have serious conversations about public issues. As the US Congress begins the process of writing a budget, I joined their show to talk about the moral issues in this debate. You can watch the full hour, complete with call-ins from Republicans, Democrats, and Independents, at CSPAN.

If you feel overwhelmed by each morning’s headlines and can’t keep up with news of Executive Orders, lawsuits, frozen funds, and court orders, know that the noise is part of the strategy. The forces that want to dismantle the infrastructure of America’s Second Reconstruction have committed to “flood the zone” with proposals that create chaos and make it impossible for us to come together and resist.

But the numbers don’t lie. Congress is writing a budget, and they have committed to cut $1.5 trillion from a $5 trillion budget so they can give massive tax breaks to the richest Americans. It’s mathematically impossible to do that without slashing social programs that the vast majority of American’s support. So they are hoping to flood the zone with so many extreme actions that we don’t have time to come together and expose what this budget really means.

That’s why at Repairers of the Breach we commissioned, “The High Moral Stakes: Our Budget, Our Future,” a report in partnership with the Institute for Policy Studies and the Economic Policy Institute. Clergy and moral leaders have committed to come together at the Capitol to pray for our nation in the face of this crisis and to demand that our leaders act to prevent proposals that destroy people and lives.

Learn more and register to join us Sunday, April 27, for a Sermon to the Nation from the Capitol and Monday, April 28, for Moral Monday at the Capitol.
